Hi! I'm Narelle Warren. I am a medical anthropologist and Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. I specialise in interdisciplinary ethnographic research exploring experiences of health, illness and care for structurally vulnerable communities.

I lead the Australian Research Council-funded 'Global Dementias' research program (ARC DP200102224), which adopts a comparative approach to understand how dementia is lived, understood and treated (including cared for) in Australia, Malaysia and Bangladesh. I also work closely with collaborators based in the UK, US, Iran and Indonesia to explore issues of ageing, chronic conditions and care environments.

My teaching covers a range of areas from Introductory-level units on Cultural Anthropology and Health Humanities to an applied, international field school in Malaysia.

You can learn more about these activities and more under the 'About' tab.
Narelle Warren, PhD
Associate Professor in Anthropology and Sociology, School of Social Sciences
Hi, thanks for visiting! I'm Narelle. I received my PhD in Public Health (Women's Health/Medical Anthropology) from the University of Melbourne in 2007, after starting (and not completing a Master of Community Health at the University of Sydney - there is a story, which I will not bore you with), and following my Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Sociology, and Bachelor of Science (Psychology) from the Australian National University in Canberra. I'm originally from Mallacoota in Far East Gippsland; growing up there has shaped a lot of my research interests and the questions that have shaped my career (and continue to shape it, even now).
